Appearance

The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a very large, muscular, mastiff-type dog. Docking of the tail and ears is optional depending on the country in which you live. There is no real stop from forehead to muzzle. The body is a bit longer than tall. The dense coat comes in two varieties: long and short. This breed should be rugged in type with big bones, large chests and wide backs. The well-boned forelimbs have powerful shoulder muscles. The skin on the face and thick and may form wrinkles.

Height Range:   24” to 32”

Weight Range:   88 to 176 lbs.

Trainability:   The Central Asian Shepherd is a calm, fearless flock guardian. Socialization is a must for the Central Asians, unless they are being used as flock guardians. They need an owner who understands the flock guard type and temperament that comes with it. This is not a breed for the timid owner.

With Children:   These independent dogs are good with all members of their family, however, they should be supervised with children.

Other Pets:   Outside the home they may try to dominate other dogs.

Climate:  This dog adapts well to all climates.

Indoor / Outdoor:   This breed requires a very large yard, the larger the better, with a high fence. Small living conditions can lead to boredom and thus digging and chewing.

Exercise Required:   The Central Asian Shepherd Dog are great for active families. They may appear to be lazy when they are laying down watching their property, but they can be up and running in a split second.

Grooming Required:   This breed requires a lot of grooming. They shed their coats heavily in the spring and should be brushed extra at this time to remove the dead hairs. They rest of the year they are light shedders, with easy coat care.
