Appearance

The Catahoula Leopard Dog has a short single coat that can be course, but is usually tight. They have a broad, flat skull. This breeds legs are solid and very strong boned. The Catahoula Leopard Dog chest has a very deep chest that provides for a good heart and great lung capacity.

Colors:   Merle or black/tan patterns

Trainability:   The Catahoula Leopard Dog is independent, protective, and territorial. Although affectionate with his master, the Catahoula is not recommended for the casual pet owner who is uninterested in allowing the dog to function in is intended capacity.

With Children:   This breed will do good with children if they are properly socialized when young.

Other Pets:   The Catahoula Leopard Dog can do good with other animals if they are raised together.

Climate:  This breed adapts well to all climates.

Indoor / Outdoor:   Some do well in apartments while other do not. It all depends on the lines of the dog and how much exercise it receives. This is not a dog that can be tied to a dog house, fed, and ignored.

Exercise Required:   When the Catahoula plays they can be very noisy and physical. They do need exercise and will start getting into trouble if they do not receive attention. This breed should have daily exercise running free in a fenced yard or safe open area. They love going for a jog, hike, or participating in agility.

Grooming Required:   Since the Catahoula is a short, single-coated dog, the grooming needs are minimal. They should have a bath a couple times of years and a good brushing once a week. This breed is an average to light constant shedder.
