The characteristic look of the Chow Chow is a giant ball of fluff with a black tongue. These dogs have a large skull, almond-shaped dark brown eyes, triangular shaped eyes and very broad muzzle. Like their tongue, their now is also large and black. They have a very short, compact body which is thick and muscular. Their tail is set high and is carried over the back in a curl most of the time.

Trainability: The Chow Chow is an aloof, independent dog that is very dominant and stubborn, but they can make a wonderful companion. They are very intelligent as well as beautiful.
With Children: Generally best with older children.
Other Pets: Not recommended in a home with other animals because of their somewhat aggressive nature.
Climate: Care must be taken in hot weather, especially during periods of high humidity, as the breed suffers greatly and may even be endangered by the combination of heat and humidity.
Indoor / Outdoor: The Chow Chow will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is relatively inactive indoors and a small yard is sufficient.
Exercise Required: Chow Chows can be lazy, but they will keep fit with regular exercise.
Grooming Required: Regular brushings of the long coat is important to maintain the lifted, standing-out look. This breed is a seasonal heavy shedder and extra care is needed when the dog is shedding its dense undercoat. Dry shampoo when necessary.
